Italy's Cinque Terre devastated by flooding

Several years ago, in 2006 to be precise, I was lucky enough to visit a part of Italy along the Ligurian coast, called the "Cinque Terre" - a breathtaking piece of the Italian Riviera where the land meets the sea in quite a dramatic way:

"Cinque Terre" is Italian for "five lands" - a reference to the 5 quaint seaside towns that appear to defy gravity as they cling to the hillsides here - Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

Unfortunately last week, gravity, and several hundred tons of mud, got the better of this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site, as 20 inches of torrential rain fell in just a few hours, flooding streets and swamping the towns with tons of debris and mud.
The devastation was severe, with several lives lost, many more missing, and the 2 worst affected towns being Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza.
Photos such as this one show the volume of water that ploughed through the towns:

It's a national tragedy for Italy, and I hope that the Italian authorities get the necessary aid in quickly, so that this beautiful little slice of the world can get back onto its feet quickly.

Flooding in JHB… check out these photos…

The recent heavy rains in JHB (and elsewhere in the country) have been causing serious problems on the roads and all over the place.
I even heard a few stories of cars being washed off of highways, which all sounds a bit far-fetched, until you see photos like these…:

...and this is what Harties looks like in flood!

The rain has continued unabated this past week, flooding roads, offices and public spaces all over Gauteng.
Re my post last week about Benoni in flood, check out these photos of Hartebeespoort Dam taken this week.

Anyone for a spot of white (or perhaps green?) water rafting...? :)

And still more rain... "Vaal flood gates to be opened", says News24.

Further to my earlier post about the flooding in Johannesburg, this news just in from News24.com:

2010-01-27 @ 11:34

Johannesburg - The flood gates on the Vaal dam will be opened because of the ongoing rainfall and will lead to higher water levels along the Vaal river on Wednesday, Gauteng police warned.

"Because of ongoing rainfall that impacts on the Vaal river water system, it has become a necessity for the relevant authorities to start with a co-ordinated opening of floodgates of the Vaal dam," Superintendent Eugene Opperman said.

Rain, rain and more rain... this is what Benoni looks like in flood!

For the past week or more, Johannesburg has been pounded by storm after storm, to the point that some areas are actually flooding.
Just check out these pics of Benoni yesterday:

At this rate we will all soon develop gills behind our ears ala Kevin Costner in Waterworld, and we will all have to wear multi-purpose shoes like these...: :)

Got any other pics of JHB in flood over the past few days?
Send them my way and I will put them up here.
